Shaping Confident Consultants: Equipping Training Faculty to Strengthen Intern Competency
1 CE Hour.
This continuing education activity focuses on strengthening training faculty competence in teaching and assessing the APA Profession-Wide Competency of Consultation and Interprofessional/Interdisciplinary Skills within doctoral psychology internship programs. Although consultation is a required competency in accredited training, many programs encounter challenges in providing developmentally appropriate, systematic instruction and evaluation. This session is designed for postdoctoral-level psychologists who serve as internship training directors, supervisors, or training faculty.
This continuing education activity includes a structured overview of the Consultation and Interprofessional/Interdisciplinary Skills competency as defined by APA, including the core knowledge, skills, and attitudes expected of doctoral psychology interns. Through didactic presentation, participants will examine common implementation challenges faced by internship training programs, such as limited access to formal consultation experiences, variability in supervisors’ consultation expertise, and difficulties operationalizing and assessing consultation behaviors across clinical and institutional contexts.
Participants will explore practical strategies for enhancing intern learning in Consultation and Interprofessional/Interdisciplinary Skills, including intentionally embedding consultation training within their internship curricula. Session content is designed to build upon the advanced professional knowledge and supervisory roles of postdoctoral level psychologists and to support their responsibilities within accredited training programs.
