Beyond Awareness: Cultivating Cultural Competence and Humility in Internship Training
1 CE Hour.
This webinar addresses the challenge of training interns in APA’s Profession-Wide Competency (PWC) in Individual and Cultural Diversity, which often arises from the broad and evolving nature of diversity. The program will begin with an overview of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to individual and cultural diversity that interns are expected to demonstrate upon completion of internship, grounded in APA accreditation expectations and current professional standards. The presenter will review core components of the PWC, including awareness of personal and systemic factors related to culture, identity, power, and privilege, as well as the application of this awareness to clinical and supervisory practice.
Building on this foundation, the webinar will review a combination of traditional didactic instruction, applied discussion-based activities, and innovative reflective exercises. Participants will examine practical methods for fostering intern development in areas such as self-awareness, cultural humility, and responsiveness to diverse client populations, including the use of supervision, case discussions, role plays, and other intentional training experiences. Attendees will be invited to reflect on their own roles as supervisors and educators, identify common challenges in diversity training, and consider adaptable strategies that can be implemented within a variety of training settings. The content is specifically designed for postdoctoral psychologists who are involved in supervision, training, or program development, offering developmentally appropriate guidance that supports their professional responsibility to prepare interns for culturally informed, ethical, and effective psychological practice.
