Nurturing the Next Generation: Strategies for Supporting Trainee Mental Health

This workshop will provide participants with essential knowledge and practical strategies to effectively support the mental health and well-being of interns. As the next generation of professionals, interns often face unique challenges during their training journey. It is crucial for supervisors, mentors, and educators to equip themselves with the necessary tools to provide a nurturing and supportive environment for these aspiring professionals. This workshop will explore various factors that impact intern mental health, including navigating a full-time workload, imposter syndrome, and work-life balance. Participants will gain insights into the signs of distress and burnout commonly experienced by interns and learn how to recognize and address these issues proactively.

Learning Objectives

Attendees will be able to:

• Identify distinctive challenges and stressors that interns encounter during their training journey.
• Increase knowledge in identifying signs of distress in interns, fostering early intervention and support to promote their well-being.
• Apply evidence-based approaches for fostering psychological safety, open communication, and mentorship within their roles as supervisors, mentors, or educators.

Presented by Dr. Stacie Freudenberg

Dr. Stacie Freudenberg is a licensed psychologist in the state of Colorado. Previously serving as the Training Director for the Colorado Psychology Internship Program (CO-PIC), she expanded the consortium from two internship sites with two interns to a network of five sites hosting seven interns. She is dedicated to cultivating a nurturing and enriching training environment for clinical psychology interns and postdoctoral fellows. Currently, Dr. Freudenberg serves as a consultant for Clover, specializing in APPIC membership and APA accreditation standards. Her knowledge and insight contribute to the advancement of professional training programs and uphold the highest standards in the field.
