The APA Profession-Wide Competency of Consultation and Interprofessional/Interdisciplinary Skills is a core component of doctoral psychology internship training, yet programs can face challenges in systematically teaching and assessing this important skillset. This training is designed to support internship training faculty in strengthening their approaches to developing interns’ consultation competency. Attendees will receive an overview of the consultation competency, as defined by APA. The session will highlight common gaps and obstacles that training programs encounter—such as limited structured opportunities for consultation, variability in supervisor expertise, and difficulty assessing competency across settings. Participants also will explore practical strategies for enhancing intern learning.

Learning Objectives

Attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the APA profession-wide competency of Consultation and Interprofessional/Interdisciplinary Skills, including key skills expected of doctoral psychology interns.
  • Identify common gaps and challenges in training and assessing interns in this competency area.
  • Describe at least 3 structured training strategies to strengthen interns’ Consultation and Interprofessional/Interdisciplinary Skills.

Presented by Dr. Erin Foley

Dr. Erin Foley is the Director of Training Initiatives for Clover Educational Consulting Group. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and completed her internship and postdoctoral training at Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital in San Diego, CA. Dr. Foley served as Training Director for an APA accredited psychology internship program and now supports doctoral, internship, and postdoctoral training programs through her work with Clover.
