Taking a Test Drive: Transforming Interviews into Supervision

Tuesday, September 17, 2026 / 1:30-2:30 Central

1 CE Hour

Description

Thursday, September 17, 2026 / 1:30-2:30 Central

1 CE Hour

The doctoral psychology internship interview is traditionally viewed as a selection process; however, it also offers a unique opportunity to begin conceptualizing the future supervisory relationship. This presentation proposes viewing the interview as a “test drive” for supervision, highlighting how applicants’ interpersonal style, reflective capacity, responsiveness to feedback, and approach to clinical uncertainty can inform individualized supervisory planning. Participants will explore strategies for intentionally attending to interview interactions through a supervisory lens while maintaining equitable and ethical selection practices. The presentation will also examine how interview observations can facilitate early rapport, anticipate developmental needs, and promote continuity between selection and supervision. Practical recommendations and illustrative examples will be provided to help supervisors leverage information gathered during the interview to foster stronger supervisory alliances and support trainee development from the very first day of internship.

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

  1. Identify interview techniques that provide clinically meaningful information about an intern’s developmental needs, interpersonal style, and potential supervisory considerations.
  2. Develop ways to apply a supervisory framework to the interview while maintaining ethical and equitable selection practices.
  3. Develop strategies for using information obtained during the interview to strengthen the supervisory alliance, anticipate challenges, and facilitate a smoother transition into supervision.

*This training session is part of Clover’s 2026 CE Extravaganza for Psychology Training Programs. Please refer to our Upcoming Events page for information on the full event.
