As Health Service Psychology (HSP) training programs navigate quickly evolving workforce needs, accreditation standards, and trainee expectations, training directors and supervisors are actively seeking effective ways to foster socially responsive and growth-promoting training environments. This presentation will highlight frameworks and strategies to strengthen supervision, mentorship, didactic curriculum, and training culture to promote trainee growth, belonging, and professional competence. Participants will learn how to utilize logic models to assess outcomes and improve program effectiveness to prepare the next generation of psychologists for excellence in practice

Learning Objectives

Participants will be able to:

1. Examine ongoing and emerging challenges and opportunities facing Health Service Psychology training programs within the current sociocultural and organizational climate.
2. Identify supervisory, training, and organizational practices that foster trainee professional development and growth, psychological safety, equity, and resilience within diverse training environments.
3. Apply evidence-informed strategies and frameworks that integrate best practices in socially responsive training and education that maintain program integrity and are aligned with accreditation implementing regulations.
4. Develop logic models and outcome evaluation to continuously assess the impact of socially responsive, and workforce development efforts on trainee success and effectiveness in achieving the program’s stated goals.

Presented by Carlina R. Wheeler, Ph.D.

Carlina Ramirez Wheeler, Ph.D. (she/her) is a multi-racial/cultural psychologist with specialized training and experience working with youth ages 0-21. Drawing from her clinical and research experiences in risk and resilience, she is dedicated to improving access to high quality, culturally responsive, and trauma-informed care through leadership in program development, psychology training, workforce development, and community-based systems.

Dr. Wheeler serves as the Director of Training for the Psychology Training Programs at the Children’s Health Council (CHC), including co-directing the APA-accredited and APPIC member Internship Training Consortium Program at Stanford Children’s Hospital- CHC. Dr. Wheeler’s commitment to promoting excellence in clinical psychology training extends to chairing the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Center (APPIC) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Prior to joining CHC, Dr. Wheeler was the former Training Director for the UC Davis Health Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (CCAP) Doctoral Internship Program and the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program.
