Supervising the Supervisors: When Intern Competence is in Question PART ONE

Clinical supervision, a subject in which little training is received, provides the foundation for development and competence of trainees. This program will focus on management of critical incidents that occur in training and strategies to address those. Steps include identification of the incident, leadership responsibility for managing incidents, management of multiple staff and trainees, remediation, and generally dealing with supervisees with problems of professional competence.
This program is designed to build upon the advanced professional knowledge and supervisory roles of postdoctoral level psychologists and to support their responsibilities within psychology training programs.
Learning Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Identify signs of supervisor incompetence.
- Describe the informed consent process to address problems of professional competence.
- List four steps implicit in remediation of problems of professional competence.

Carol Falender, Ph.D. is co-author of multiple books on clinical supervision: Clinical Supervision: A Competency-based Approach (2004; second edition, 2021), Getting the Most Out of Clinical Training and Supervision: A Guide for Practicum Students and Interns (2012), The Essentials of Competency-based Clinical Supervision (2017), co-editor of Casebook for Competency-based Clinical Supervision with Edward Shafranske, Multiculturalism and Diversity in Clinical Supervision: A Competency-based Approach (2014) edited with Edward Shafranske and Celia Falicov, and Consultation in Psychology: A Competency-based Approach (2020) with Edward Shafranske. Dr. Falender was Chair of the Supervision Guidelines Taskforce in 2014 and the Revision Taskforce in 2025 for the Board of Educational Affairs of APA. She received a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association for innovative contributions to the practice of clinical supervision, and in 2023, the Distinguished Award for International Advancement of Psychotherapy from Division 29. Dr. Falender was also awarded the Chuck Faltz Lifetime Achievement Award by the California Psychological Association in 2023.
