Elevate Your Internship: An Introductory Guide to Building a High-Quality Doctoral Psychology Internship Program 

Abstract:

Developing a doctoral psychology internship program that meets or exceeds the standards of the field is a daunting task. This presentation will cover the foundational components of doctoral psychology internship training. Discussion will include an examination of key program resources and sustainability factors as well as the criteria for membership in the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) and the Standards for Accreditation as defined by the American Psychological Association (APA).

Presenter Bio:

Dr. Erin Foley is the Director of Training Initiatives for Clover Educational Consulting Group. She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Fairleigh Dickinson University and completed her internship and postdoctoral training at Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital in San Diego, CA. Dr. Foley served as Training Director for an APA accredited psychology internship program and now supports doctoral, internship, and postdoctoral training programs through her work with Clover.

  • Outline the procedures for applying for APPIC membership and obtaining APA accreditation.
  • Describe the importance of the 9 profession-wide competencies in doctoral psychology internship training
  • Outline the supervision and didactic training requirements for internship programs as stipulated by the APPIC membership criteria and the APA Standards of Accreditation
  • Describe at least three program-specific policies for training psychology interns
  • Identify 2 types of trainee data that programs should be prepared to collect
